Stories behind our mission · Nigeria

No meal should
cost a life.

Behind every headline is a family, a future and a place at the table left empty. We remember the lives lost when gatherings meant to offer support became moments of tragedy.

A record of remembrance

The report described people arriving before the scheduled start and a crowd attempting to enter through a small entrance. The event was intended to provide food and gifts.

Police-confirmed figure reported on 28 May 2022.

For our mission: food access needs a clear arrival plan and a safe handover—not a race to an entrance.
Discounted rice sale

Yaba, Lagos · Lagos

Affordable rice should never come with this risk.

A crowd crush during the Nigeria Customs Service’s discounted rice exercise in Yaba resulted in deaths. TheCable reported seven deaths at the time; a later Customs account referred to four lives lost.

Customs subsequently acknowledged fatalities and suspended the exercise. Its April newsletter documented a condolence visit to a bereaved family. The differing counts are retained here rather than presented as a settled total.

Sources differ on the death toll. No single figure is asserted here.

For our mission: communicate stock limits and collection arrangements before people travel or gather.
Campus food distribution

Keffi · Nasarawa

Students came for support. Two did not return.

Two Nasarawa State University students died during a distribution of state-government food support. Channels Television reported that 23 students were hospitalised, citing the university’s information office.

The planned distribution took place at the university’s convocation arena. This campus tragedy is especially relevant to Chop1st’s focus on student food access.

University-attributed figures reported on 22 March 2024.

For our mission: student support should be organised around predictable access, with safety built into campus delivery.

The December 20 report said police were investigating the circumstances. This was a children’s event, not simply a food queue; it belongs here as a related reminder of the duty of care at public gatherings.

Police-attributed figure reported on 20 December 2024. This summary does not determine legal responsibility.

For our mission: children and their caregivers need specific protection in any community gathering.

For our mission: compassion must extend to how people arrive, wait and receive support.

For our mission: goodwill needs a distribution plan that matches the number of people expected.

Police-attributed account published on 2 March 2026.

For our mission: the responsibility to protect people continues across seasons, locations and forms of giving.

From remembrance to responsibility

Good intentions deserve
thoughtful systems.

These stories inform the kind of food access Chop1st aims to build. They are not evidence that our platform has already prevented incidents. Technology can support organisation; it cannot replace trained people, safe venues or responsible planning.

Predictable access

Our design goal is clear collection arrangements and timely information, so getting support does not depend on arriving first.

Safety before scale

Our operating ambition is to match distribution capacity to demand and work with appropriate local partners before expanding.

Dignity at every step

We aim for respectful student support, clear eligibility and help that does not turn hardship into public spectacle.

About this collection

Research reviewed 28 October 2026. This is a selected record, not a complete national database. Summaries are written by Chop1st from the linked reporting; casualty counts reflect the dated sources and may differ across reports. We avoid a combined death toll because the events and reporting are not directly interchangeable.

The term “stampede” appears in many source headlines. We also use “crowd crush” to describe these incidents without blaming people seeking assistance. No conclusion about an individual’s criminal responsibility is made here. Chop1st does not claim affiliation with the publishers, victims’ families or organisers.
